PNR Status Check — Everything You Need to Know

By Site Admin Apr 30, 2026

Every train ticket booked on IRCTC has a unique 10-digit number called the PNR (Passenger Name Record). Your PNR is your ticket's identity. This guide explains exactly what PNR is, how to check PNR status, how to read the status codes, and what to do when your status is WL or RAC.

What is a PNR Number?

PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a 10-digit unique number assigned to every train booking in India. When you book a ticket, your PNR is printed on the ticket or shown in your booking confirmation email. The PNR stores:

  • Passenger details (name, age, gender)
  • Journey details (train, date, from, to, coach, berth)
  • Booking status (Confirmed, WL, RAC)
  • Fare paid

Where to Find Your PNR Number

  • Physical ticket: Top-left corner
  • ERS (e-ticket): First line of the ticket PDF
  • IRCTC email confirmation: Subject line includes the PNR
  • IRCTC app > My Bookings: All active PNRs listed

How to Check PNR Status

There are several ways to check PNR status:

Method 1: SMS

SMS your 10-digit PNR to 139. You receive an immediate reply with current status. Works without internet.

Method 2: NTES Website

Visit enquiry.indianrail.gov.in and click "PNR Status." Enter your 10-digit PNR and submit for real-time status.

Method 3: IRCTC App

Open the app > My Bookings > Click on a PNR for detailed live status.

Method 4: 139 Helpline

Call 139, say your PNR number, and get an automated status reading.

Understanding PNR Status Codes

  • CNF — Confirmed. Berth and coach assigned. You are all set.
  • WL xx — Waiting List position xx. Not yet confirmed.
  • RAC xx — Reservation Against Cancellation. Shared berth assigned.
  • REGRET / WL 0 — WL position 0 — likely to confirm, check again.
  • CAN — Ticket has been cancelled.

What Happens to WL and RAC After Charting?

The train chart is prepared 4 hours before departure. At charting:

  • WL tickets that get confirmed → Berth assigned, you can travel
  • WL tickets NOT confirmed → Auto-cancelled, refund processed
  • RAC tickets → Assigned a full berth if possible, otherwise shared side berth

Can You Board With RAC?

Yes! RAC ticket holders can and should board the train. You share a side berth (SL) with another RAC passenger. If passengers cancel after charting, TTE allots you a full berth inside the train.

PNR Status Check Best Practices

  • Check status a week before travel if you are on WL
  • Check again 2–3 days before travel
  • Check once more on the day of travel, after charting time (4 hours before departure)
  • Download your e-ticket or save it offline in case of no network connectivity

Conclusion

Your PNR is your most important travel document. Always note it down separately from your ticket. Use SMS 139 for the quickest status check without mobile data. And as always, use IndianTrainSchedule to find trains and compare options before using IRCTC to book.
